The story takes place in the Aleran Empire, which contains "crafters", people who can control the elements: water, air, earth, fire, wood, and metal, through a person's bond with an element's fury.Ī young woman named Amara travels with her mentor Fidelias as part of her graduation exercise. The novel was well received, with critics praising Butcher's turn at a more traditional fantasy setting, fast pacing, action, and his characterization of the antagonists. It tells the story of a young boy named Tavi who is the only one without any fury-crafting abilities. Orbit Books released a paperback edition in the United Kingdom in December 2009. The novel was first released by Ace Books in the United States as a Hardcover edition on October 5, 2004, followed by a Paperback edition on June 26, 2005. ![]() Furies of Calderon is the first novel in the high fantasy series Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. ![]() ![]() ![]() The middle of the book slowed a bit for me, but not for long - soon after it was back on track and I was lost in its pages again. It also had an equal balance between Fin and Ash, switching back at forth at such a reasonable pace, so as I didn't get bored from reading from the perspective of one character. It moves fast, too, not lingering on one scene for longer than necessary. The book itself flows smoothly, like.well, water, which I guess is fitting. When I book grips you so strongly to where your eyes linger on the page, that's when you know you have a great book. That's what made Everblue a 5/5 stars book. When I put the book down, I immediately wanted to pick it up again and keep reading. I would open the book up, telling myself I would only read one - maybe two - chapters, only to look down at the page number and see I'd read over a hundred. Everblue by Brenda Pandos has such an addicting, mesmerizing quality to it. ![]() ![]() ![]() With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago – surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness. I was more drawn to Daymond’s story than some of the featured entrepreneurs. ![]() Daymond's Grind: not quitting until he has nothing left to give to his mission, cause and purpose. The Rise is to realize that nothing will be achieved if your dreams remain safely in your head so wake up before the sun, define your mission for the day and determine how you will make the most effective use of your time. The Grind is to actually do the work. According to Daymond, the thing that all the entrepreneurs that are featured in the book do well is that they know how to both work hard and work smart. My takeaways from the book: Have a killer work ethic and maximize your time. ![]() The book is filled with “old school” advice that you would get from your mother or grandmother who had to work two or three jobs to make ends meet. The foundation of the book is advice that Daymond John received from his mother - his mother displayed a giant can opener that read “THINK BIG” and also taught him that time will pass anyway, so he might as well use his time productively. It gives powerful advice on how to maximize your time by making the best use of every moment. Rise and Grind is motivation that actually works. ![]() Thankfully, the time that you take to read the book will be time well-spent. ![]() The first paragraph of Rise and Grind advises the reader to spend time wisely because time is the only thing that you cannot get back. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I really enjoyed Vivian’s character which pings off the page. ![]() I’ve cut short the rather chatty blurb, as I think it provides way too many spoilers. I am also including this one in the fun and frolics, here.īLURB: Vivian Kawabata can’t wait to claim her privileged destiny. However when it was part of a Book Funnel promo I’d joined, I decided to give it a go. I’ve read one of Pajonas’s books before – see my review of Removed – and enjoyed the quality of the writing, so while the cover on this one caught my eye, I wasn’t too sure about the reverse harem dynamic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future.
